Lot 140:
A Pair of Japanese Imari Porcelain Plates
Description
A pair of Japanese hard-paste porcelain plates decorated in the Imari nishiki-de palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red, orange, green, and yellow enamels with gilded highlights. The decoration features a dynamic composition of overlapping geometric and fan-shaped tashiro-mon panels (photo 1). These panels are filled with stylised cherry blossoms, plum trees, and karakusa scrolling foliage, set against background diaper patterns in blue and white. The reverse of each plate is plain white except for a hand-painted mark in red overglaze at the centre of the base (photo 2). The mark consists of a single Japanese character reading Bi positioned above two crossed diagonal lines. The plates are representative of the Arita porcelain production of Hizen Province during the Meiji period.
