Lot 255:
George III Mahogany Serpentine Fronted Dressing Mirror
Description
A George III mahogany dressing mirror, also known as a toilet or swing mirror. The piece features an oval mirror plate set within a crossbanded mahogany frame, suspended between two scrolling S-shaped uprights. The base is of serpentine form, characteristic of the Hepplewhite style, and contains three drawers arranged as a wide central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers. The primary timber is mahogany with mahogany veneers, enhanced by boxwood stringing and crossbanded borders. The drawers are fitted with circular brass drop handles on pressed backplates, and the mirror is secured to the uprights by brass tension screws. The construction demonstrates period techniques, including the use of fine veneers and inlaid stringing. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the exterior of the piece.
