Lot 179:
A Mid-Century Modern West German Style Fat Lava Ceramic Planter
Description
This mid-century modern ceramic vessel is designed in the style of West German art pottery from the fat lava era. The item is constructed from earthenware, with the reddish-brown clay body visible at the unglazed foot ring. It features a tapered cylindrical form terminating in a distinctive scalloped or wavy rim. The exterior decoration comprises a relief-moulded band around the upper body, containing circular medallions filled with a vibrant, thick orange-red glaze. These medallions are interspersed with stylised foliate or fleur-de-lis motifs. The remainder of the exterior is finished in a heavily textured, mottled glaze in shades of sage green and dark brown, characteristic of the fat lava aesthetic. The interior is finished with a smoother glaze in a coordinating tonal palette. The base shows a mottled glaze within a circular unglazed foot ring; no maker’s marks, model numbers, or country of origin stamps are discernible.
