Lot 31:
A pair of Chinese blue and white character jars in the Chenghua style, Republic period or later
Description
A pair of ovoid porcelain jars decorated in underglaze blue. Each jar features twin zoomorphic handles glazed in a deep cobalt blue at the shoulders. The exterior is divided into two decorative registers. The upper register displays a continuous narrative landscape with scholars and figures amongst trees and mountains. The lower register is densely decorated with vertical columns of handwritten Chinese calligraphic script. One jar is accompanied by its original domed lid, which is decorated with further calligraphic characters, landscape elements, and a globular blue-glazed finial. The base of each jar features a recessed foot with a square underglaze blue seal mark in Chinese zhuanshu (seal script). The marks are not clearly legible as a specific name or reign period but are consistent in style with apocryphal marks found on twentieth-century revival wares. The glaze has a slight greyish-white tint and a smooth surface finish.
Height of jar with lid: 27 cm
Height of jar without lid: 22.5 cm
Width at widest point: 17 cm.
