Lot 32:
A large blue and white porcelain pagoda-form caddy, in the Qianlong style, 20th century
Description
A large blue and white porcelain lidded jar or caddy of hexagonal section, constructed in a three-tiered architectural pagoda form. The vessel features two flared, ribbed eaves mimicking traditional Chinese roofing. The body is decorated with six rectangular panels containing underglaze cobalt blue landscape scenes of mountains, rivers, trees, and dwellings. The upper tier is further decorated with smaller landscape and floral vignettes. The cobalt blue application exhibits varying tones with darker, concentrated areas showing a heaping and piled effect. The base is finished with a pale celadon-tinted glaze, while the hexagonal foot rim remains unglazed. A square four-character mark is painted in underglaze blue within a double-lined border on the base; the characters are rendered in a stylized seal script and are not legible as a specific name or reign. The lower border above the foot is decorated with a continuous diaper pattern containing svastika motifs.
Height: 42.5 cm.
