Lot 165:
Late Victorian Black Slate Mantel Clock
Description
A late Victorian or Edwardian mantel clock of architectural form. The case is constructed from black slate, potentially Belgian black marble, featuring a stepped base and a pediment-style top. The circular dial is enclosed by a brass bezel and features a cream-coloured chapter ring with stylized black Arabic numerals. The dial has a recessed brass centre and a single winding aperture located at the 3 o’clock position. The mechanical, spring-driven timepiece movement is accessed via the rear. The brass movement back plate is stamped with the numbers 2, 3, and 8 horizontally above the central axis, and 1 and 4 below it. These marks appear to be production or calibre numbers rather than a specific maker’s mark.
