Lot 117:
A Collection of Mid-20th Century Glazed Ceramic Decorative Wares, attributed to Wade
Description
This collection of glazed earthenware decorative objects features various novelty and commemorative wares typical of mid-20th-century British production. The group is largely attributed to Wade and includes several figural dishes with applied animals such as a panda, dog, rabbit, and squirrels. A prominent feature of the collection is a large trinket box modelled as a tortoise with a detailed brown and ochre glaze shell. Also included are a pair of rectangular troughs with a moulded basketweave exterior, a turquoise-blue ribbed vessel with a scroll handle, and a green leaf-shaped dish. A specific commemorative piece is present in the form of a green-glazed dish featuring a silver-toned miniature of a state coach and a plaque inscribed with the words BUCKINGHAM PALACE. Other items comprise a small white lidded box with floral decoration, a textured bowl containing a bear figurine, and a yellow dish with an applied metal crest. The pieces exhibit characteristic commercial ceramic techniques of the period, including slip-cast modelling and multi-tone glazing.
