A 19th Century Dutch Style Floral Marquetry Tall Chest of Drawers
Description
This tall chest of drawers, also referred to as a semainier, is constructed in the 19th century Dutch floral marquetry tradition. The upright rectangular form comprises six graduated long drawers. Both the drawer fronts and side panels are profusely decorated with intricate scrolling floral and foliate marquetry executed in various fruitwoods, such as boxwood and holly, inlaid into a dark mahogany or walnut ground. The drawers are flanked by rounded corner pilasters terminating in metal capitals and bases. The chest is supported by short, turned bun feet. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of circular embossed metal backplates with ring-drop handles and a central decorative keyhole escutcheon. No maker marks are visible on the exterior of the piece.
