Lot 216:
Late Victorian Dark-Stained Hardwood Upholstered Smoker's Bow Style Armchair
Description
A late Victorian or early Edwardian armchair in the style of a traditional smoker’s bow or captain’s chair. The frame is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, common for utility furniture of this period, and features a broad wrap-around curved armrest terminating in scrolled ends. The armrest is supported by turned spindles. This specific example has been modified with a later-added oval upholstered back panel and a circular upholstered seat, both covered in a green and cream floral damask fabric. The chair is raised on four turned legs joined by an H-stretcher for stability. The underside of the seat frame contains a circular wooden insert, which indicates that the chair may have originally featured a solid wood or caned seat before the addition of the upholstery. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible on the timber frame or underside.
