Description

A Royal Mail philatelic numismatic cover (PNC) issued in 2015 as part of the Great War Centenary series, specifically themed The War at Sea. The cover features six Royal Mail postage stamps from the 2015 Great War issue. The top row includes three 1st class stamps: an abstract poppy design by Howard Hodgkin, a typographic stamp with lines from Charles Hamilton Sorley’s poem All the Hills and Vales Along, and a portrait of Rifleman Kulbir Thapa VC. The bottom row features three £1.52 stamps: The Kensingtons at Laventie by Eric Kennington, a silhouette of a soldier at a grave at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, and the leather football used by the London Irish Rifles at the Battle of Loos. All stamps are cancelled with a circular pictorial postmark inscribed THE GREAT WAR CENTENARY HEROES OF THE SEA 14.5.2015 ORKNEY. Set into the lower right of the cover is a 2015 commemorative £2 coin featuring a Royal Navy battleship on the reverse, with the inscription THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918. The left side of the cover displays a graphic montage of Royal Navy sailors formed into the shape of a naval gun turret, with a sign referencing HMS New Zealand and the battles of Heligoland 1914, Dogger Bank 1915, and Jutland 1916. The item is attributed to Royal Mail Tallents House, Edinburgh, and is a limited edition numbered № 06177.
