Lot 202:
A 19th-century Figured Hardwood Tea Caddy
Description
A 19th-century tea caddy constructed from a figured hardwood, possibly rosewood or mahogany, with a dark polished finish. The rectangular box features a side-hinged door that opens to reveal an interior fitted with two vertically stacked drawers. Each drawer is equipped with a small turned wooden pull knob. The door is fitted with an internal brass lock and a circular white escutcheon, likely bone or mother-of-pearl. The piece is assembled with brass hinges and shows evidence of traditional cabinet-making techniques. This type of compact, locking storage unit was frequently employed as a secure internal compartment within larger Victorian iron safes. No maker’s marks or labels are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces.
