George Collingwood Smith RWS (British, 1815-1887), Ryde Pier, Isle of Wight, Watercolour
Description
A nineteenth-century coastal landscape by George Collingwood Smith RWS (British, 1815-1887), depicting Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight. The work is executed in watercolour with gouache highlights on paper. The composition features a group of figures and beached timbers beside a stone bastion in the foreground, looking across the water towards the distant pier under an atmospheric, stormy sky. The multi-lined cream mount is inscribed in capital letters RYDE PIER. COLLINGWOOD SMITH, R.W.S. The verso retains a detailed, handwritten biographical label on paper fixed to the wooden backboard, which provides an account of the artist’s life, his instruction under J.D. Harding, and his role as Treasurer of the Royal Watercolour Society. The painting is housed in a simple wooden frame with a gilt border.
