A Late 19th Century Mahogany Banjo Aneroid Barometer by Russell of Norwich
Description
A mahogany cased banjo-style aneroid barometer and thermometer produced by Russell of Norwich. The mahogany case is designed in the traditional banjo form featuring a swan-neck pediment and a circular inlaid boxwood and ebony sunburst patera to the lower section. The 5-inch silvered dial is protected by a brass-rimmed glass bezel and is calibrated with a scale from 28 to 31 inches of mercury. The dial includes traditional weather indications: Stormy, Much Rain, Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair, and Very Dry. It is fitted with a black steel indicating hand and a brass-tone manual setting hand. The dial is signed Russell Norwich on the right-hand side. The neck of the barometer contains an inset silvered-scale thermometer calibrated in both Fahrenheit (0 to 120 degrees) and Centigrade (-20 to 50 degrees).
