A Set of Japanese Satsuma Moriage Porcelain Tea Ware in the Thousand Faces Pattern
Description
This group of Japanese export porcelain is decorated in the Thousand Faces pattern, featuring numerous hand-painted figures representing Arhats or Immortals. The decoration is executed with heavy raised moriage enamels and extensive gilding on a white porcelain ground. The scenes are framed by borders of alternating geometric diaper panels in iron-red, cobalt blue, and gold. The set comprises a lidded twin-handled vessel, several teacups with gilded handles, and a collection of saucers and plates in two sizes. The base of a saucer is marked in black pigment with the characters for Satsuma Kyozan.
