Lot 287:
A Pair of Late 19th Century Faux Bamboo Side Chairs
Description
A pair of late 19th to early 20th-century side chairs in the style of either Morris and Co, or Liberty Argyle Ford Maddox Brown constructed from turned hardwood, likely beech or fruitwood. The frames are stained and shaped with prominent knuckles to simulate the appearance of natural bamboo. Each backrest features three horizontal top rails positioned above a lattice of vertical spindles and a single central horizontal rail. The square seats are fitted with woven rush in a traditional four-triangle envelope pattern. Each chair is supported by four tapered legs, which are joined by triple-turned stretchers to the front and sides and a single stretcher to the rear. No maker marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the frames or understructures in the provided images.
