Lot 33:
A blue and white bird and flower baluster vase in the late Qing style
Description
A Chinese blue and white porcelain vase of baluster form featuring a high, slightly flared neck and a wide, everted rim. The body is decorated with arched panels containing a bird perched upon a flowering branch above large, stylized peony blossoms. These central motifs are rendered in a vibrant sapphire-blue cobalt applied in varying washes, showing a noticeable heaping and piled effect in the more saturated areas of the floral decoration. The neck is ornamented with a ruyi-head and floral lappet border, while a geometric key-fret border encircles the lower portion above the base. The piece is finished in a bright, clear glaze with a subtle blue tint and characteristic pinprick glaze contractions. The underside of the base is glazed in a matching tone and is entirely unmarked, showing no reign marks or double rings. The unglazed, slightly tapered foot rim reveals a white, compact porcelain paste with some small chips and minor kiln grit.
Height: 23.5 cm.
