Lot 51:
An English relief-molded earthenware wall pocket with foliate decoration
Description
An English slip-cast earthenware wall pocket designed for floral displays. The form features a tapered body with a flared rim, decorated in relief with a foliate design of scrolls and leaves at the base. The upper portion is accented with horizontal ribbing and wavy bands. The piece is finished in a multi-toned matte glaze, exhibiting a transition from pale cream at the rim, through an ochre-yellow band, into a celadon green lower section. The glaze pools in the recessed areas of the relief molding to accentuate the pattern. The reverse is flat-backed to sit against a wall, featuring a central keyhole-shaped mounting aperture flanked by two smaller circular holes. The reverse bears the impressed mark MADE IN ENGLAND above the shape number 583. A small mark, possibly the number 7 or a chevron symbol, is hand-painted in brown pigment to the centre of the reverse.
