Description

A collection of four ceramic wall pockets of varying forms and glazes. The first is a white porcelain heraldic wall pocket in the shape of a shield. It features a transfer-printed coat of arms for Halifax, Canada, depicting a sailor and a pioneer flanking a shield with a kingfisher above a scroll reading MARI MERCES HALIFAX CANADA. The rim is finished with a gold-tone line. The reverse bears a black printed mark depicting a bird above the name W.H. GOSS.

The second is a turquoise-glazed earthenware pocket modelled as a horseshoe intertwined with a stylized shell or scroll. It is decorated with gold-tone accents on the raised ridges. The reverse is stamped in black with the word Foreign.

The third is a fluted earthenware pocket with a bulbous base, finished in a two-tone drip glaze transitioning from cream to dark chocolate brown. The reverse is incised with the number 1055.

The final piece is a small grey stoneware or heavy earthenware conical pocket with a flattened back. It is decorated with a textured grey glaze and an incised sgraffito depiction of a fish with white inlay. There is an incised signature or word on the reverse, which is not clearly legible due to the coarse texture of the clay.
