Description

A French military-themed novelty desk inkwell fashioned from metal and modeled after the M15 Adrian helmet. The piece is finished in horizon blue paint, characteristic of the French infantry uniform from 1915 onwards. The dome features a raised longitudinal crest and an applied front badge depicting a flaming grenade, the traditional insignia of the French infantry. A thin leather band is affixed across the front brim, bearing the hand-lettered inscription CRANONNE in dark characters. This likely refers to Craonne, a commune in the Aisne department that was the site of heavy fighting during the 1917 Nivelle Offensive.

The construction consists of a cast or heavy alloy base with a hinged sheet metal lid forming the helmet dome. The interior of the lid shows a blue-tinted finish and the circular base is flat. The dome opens at the rear via a three-part metal hinge to reveal a central well designed to receive a glass reservoir. A partial leather chin strap is attached to the interior sides of the dome by metal tabs.

Diameter of base: 9.5 cm

Height: 6 cm.
