Description

A pair of aquatone prints after original etchings by Richard E. Bishop, titled Daybreak and From a Battery. These works utilize a fine-grain intaglio process to replicate the tonal qualities of aquatint, depicting North American waterfowl. The first print, titled Daybreak, shows three Canada Geese at the water’s edge under a mottled sky. The second print, titled From a Battery, depicts ducks in flight and resting on water as viewed from a low-profile hunting blind. Each print features a distinct plate mark and is pencil-signed in the lower right margin as R E Bishop imp., with one also dated 1926. The titles Daybreak and From a Battery are inscribed in pencil in the lower left margins. The prints are housed in wooden frames with gilt inner liners and paper mounts.

A typed paper label on the reverse states: RICHARD E. BISHOP was born in New York in 1887. He took a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University, but turned to etching and the very difficult medium of aquatint in 1920. Four years later his etching “CANADA GEESE” won the Charles E. Lea prize, and in 1936 he was commissioned by the US Government to execute the design for the Federal migratory-bird stamp for 1936. These fine prints in ‘aquatone’ after the original etchings and aquatints are signed and inscribed by the artist, and limited to 1050 plates (of which this is No. 215). They were produced in 1936. In this label, the name STEPHEN has been crossed out in blue ink and replaced with RICHARD.

Width: 18 inches (larger frame).
