Lot 69:
A Victorian Style Silver-plated Coffee Pot and Salver by Barker Brothers
Description
A two-piece silver-plated set in the Victorian Rococo Revival style, comprising a lidded coffee pot and a coordinating salver. The coffee pot is of tall, baluster form, featuring a hinged lid surmounted by a decorative foliate finial. It is fitted with an ornate, double-scrolled handle containing two white heat-insulating spacers and a long, curved pouring spout. The body, lid, and spout are decorated with chased and repousse foliate scrolls, floral motifs, and diaper-patterned cartouches. One cartouche features an engraved monogram of intertwined characters. The salver is of circular form with a shaped, molded rim decorated with scrolls and shells, supported on three scrolled feet. The flat surface is engraved with a wide foliate scroll border surrounding a central engraved monogram.
The salver bears a series of five vertical pseudo-hallmarks: a stylized gothic letter ‘S’, the number ‘8’, a stylized gothic letter ‘B’, a symbol resembling a four-petaled flower or cross, and a stylized gothic letter ‘E’. These marks identify the maker as Barker Brothers of Birmingham. Both the salver and the coffee pot bear a central engraved monogram of the intertwined letters ‘L’ and ‘S’.
Diameter: 25.5 cm
