Description

A Victorian commemorative ceremonial trowel featuring a heart-shaped blade and a decorative shell-moulded bolster at the junction of the blade and handle. The face of the blade is ornately engraved with a foliate border and various Victorian-style fonts. The central engraving reads: PRESENTED TO C. Eckersley Esq. JP ON THE OCCASION OF HIS LAYING A Foundation Stone OF THE WELSH BAPTIST CHURCH TYLDESLEY June 24th 1893. The decoration includes Victorian scrollwork, floral motifs, and a central fan-like design. The metal shows a yellowish tone on the bolster and neck, characteristic of silver-plated brass or base metal where surface wear has occurred. The handle features a turned, beaded ferrule and a grip made of a different material, likely turned wood or bone. No hallmarks or maker’s marks are visible in the photographs.
