Lot 216:
A 22-piece collection of Japanese moriage porcelain dragonware and geisha scene teaware
Description
This 22-piece collection of Japanese porcelain teaware, dating from the mid-20th century Showa period, features two distinct decorative styles. The first group comprises nine teacups and matching saucers decorated in the dragonware style. These pieces are characterised by a grey and white dragon winding around the body in raised moriage slip relief with gilded highlights against a shaded ochre and brown ground. The second group consists of two cups and matching saucers of a more cylindrical form, featuring hand-painted scenes of geishas in traditional dress within a mountainous landscape. A distinctive feature of this collection is the presence of geisha lithophanes, translucent images of a geisha’s head in the base of the cups visible when held to a light source. No maker’s marks or backstamps are visible on the items in the provided images.
