Lot 90:
A Collection of Nine Taunton Cider and Blackthorn Cider Promotional Earthenware Loving Cups and Mugs
Description
An assortment of nine pieces of glazed creamware pottery produced for the Taunton Cider Company of Norton Fitzwarren, Somerset. The collection comprises six two-handled loving cups or tygs of various sizes, two large two-handled mugs, and one small single-handled mug. The pieces are decorated with a combination of polychrome and monochrome transfer-printed designs. Branding includes Taunton Cider and Dry Blackthorn Cider, with some items featuring the inscription Matured in oak vats at Norton Fitzwarren. Decorative motifs include traditional scenes of cider production, such as horse-drawn presses and rural mill buildings, alongside floral sprigs and apple illustrations. Based on the distinctive forms and promotional nature, these items are attributed to Wade Potteries, a known producer of commemorative ware for the Taunton brand during the mid-to-late 20th century.
